Why Polonnaruwa is worth it
Polonnaruwa is Sri Lanka's best-preserved medieval capital — the golden-age city of Parakramabahu the Great. In one compact, cyclable site you get the sublime Gal Vihara rock Buddhas, the sacred Quadrangle, royal palaces, great brick stupas and the enormous Parakrama Samudra reservoir. It's less famous than Sigiriya's rock, but for many it's the richest stop in the Cultural Triangle.
Getting there and around
Come on a day tour from Sigiriya, Dambulla, Habarana or Kandy — they sort the transport and, importantly, a guide who brings the history to life. Once there, the flat, leafy layout is perfect for the bicycles many tours provide, letting you glide between monuments that are otherwise a hot walk apart.
City-only or add a safari?
If the archaeology is the point, a Polonnaruwa-focused tour gives the ruins their due. If you want a full day, the combos add an elephant safari in nearby Minneriya or Kaudulla — often spectacular in the dry season. Both are on the booking widget; choose by how much time you want among the stones versus in the park.
See it well
Start early for cool air and soft light on the Gal Vihara, dress modestly for a living Buddhist site, and bring sun protection and water. Leave time to sit by the Parakrama Samudra at the end — and mind the macaques. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before lets you lock in a day now and adjust later.
